Meet our New Board Members!

By Becca Mendelson Hughson, Director of Administration, Development, Marketing, and Events

On April 22nd SGVBG hosted our Annual Member meeting.  All Garden Members were invited to join us for festive food, drinks, live music by Stan Lee and the Ten Sleepless Knights, and to vote on our new Board Members.  SGVBG is thrilled to introduce you to the newest members of our Board of Directors: Lisa Moorhead and Susan Kraeger!

Lisa Moorhead

Lisa Moorhead has over thirty-five years as a legal professional, thirty of which while living on St. Croix. Her last and longest employment, as assistant legal counsel for the Virgin Islands Legislature, ended in 2019 when she retired from Government service. She has lived on St. Croix over a forty plus year period and is well acquainted with Virgin Islands law as a law clerk, cabinet member. and twenty plus years as a litigator.

Lisa Moorhead maintains a limited practice and continues her community commitments as an elected member of the Board of Elections and a board member of the Women’s Coalition. Being semi-retired affords her the opportunity to better serve her Virgin Islands home. She envisions more educational opportunities for our youth through cooperative programs with our schools and enhanced outreach to the entire St. Croix community.

Susan Kraeger

Susan Kraeger is a member of the first graduating class of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal School in Christiansted, St. Croix.

Her professional career spanned more than 40 years – first in sales and marketing in the ‘for profit’ world, and in the final 20 years as a marketing and development professional in the far more soul satisfying world of ‘not for profit.’

Her professional history includes work as a Certified Marital and Family Mediator in the state of N.H.

She returned to St. Croix in 2009 as the director of development for The Good Hope School, then took a position at Lutheran Social Services of the VI as their director of public relations and development until her retirement in 2014.

Immediately prior to coming to St. Croix, she worked as the executive director of a micro- lending program in Ghana, and continued raising money for water and sanitation projects there until 2019.

Since 2018, in the wake of Hurricane Maria, she has coordinated The St. Croix Orchid Society’s affiliation with the Garden in the restoration and care of all the orchids on the campus.

Additionally, she and another SCOS member have spent hundreds of hours in the Garden’s Herbarium mounting and recording, inputting data, and alphabetizing and cataloging the Garden’s 6,000+ collection of St. Croix botanicals dating from 1972.

Delighted to be a full time resident of St. Croix again, she lives on the South Shore where she continues to nurture her lifelong love of literature and orchids.

Ms. Kraeger has served/serves on the boards of:

  • The St. Croix Country Club
  • The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts
  • The St. Croix Avian Sanctuary (Treasurer)
  • The St. Croix Orchid Society (President)
