The Pink Pineapple

The next time you explore the St. George Village Botanical Garden, make sure to keep an eye out for our beautiful pink pineapple! This is a stunning example of Ananas bracteatusa small, wild  pineapple that is native to the tropical forests of South America. It makes a gorgeous ornamental for any garden landscape and reminds us of the fascinating history of this favorite fruit! Columbus first introduced the pineapple to the Western world in 1493 where it wasn’t successfully cultivated until the 1700s. Since then, pineapple farmers have bred the large, delicious, juicy fruit that we know today from the smaller fruits that were known hundreds of years ago.
